From Farmhouse to Energy-Positive Home: A Circular Renovation Plan

This thesis focuses on transforming a former farmhouse at the Offgrid Oase site in Hulten into an energy-neutral or energy-positive home. Offgrid Oase aims to establish a fully self-sufficient and circular living environment, aligning with the national ambition of achieving a fully circular economy by 2050. This research contributes by designing a model home using innovative construction techniques, locally available materials, and renewable energy solutions.

During your research, you will receive content-based guidance from an expert at MNEXT, a Centre of Expertise at Avans University of Applied Sciences. MNEXT collaborates with SMEs, students, and researchers on practice-oriented research into sustainable materials, such as biobased plastics, and contributes to the material and energy transition.

Problem Statement

How can the house at Offgrid Oase be renovated into an energy-positive home while maximizing the use of recyclable and locally grown materials?

Objective

To develop a renovation plan that:

  1. Achieves an energy-positive home.
  2. Maximizes the use of circular construction materials.
  3. Investigates the potential for locally grown materials, such as biobased construction materials.

Research Questions

  1. Which sustainable building materials can be used to create an energy-positive home?
  2. What are the possibilities for growing building materials locally on the available 14,000 m² of land?
  3. Which design strategies support a circular renovation with minimal CO2 emissions?
  4. How can energy-positive design be integrated into a circular renovation approach?

Expected Outcomes

This plan will include technical drawings, material studies, and implementation recommendations.

The thesis aims to deliver a blueprint for circular home renovation applicable to similar projects in the Netherlands.

Location

Hulteneindseweg 15, Hulten (Noord-Brabant), and Lovensdijkstraat 63, Breda.
