Mapping the potential of the different value chains using hotspot analysis and LCA

This internship offers the opportunity to be part of a large scale project in which the environmental impact of different value chains is to be assessed. Different biomass rest streams are investigated; they will be pressed and the resulting liquid fraction will be submitted to different valorization techniques, further described in the “Goal of the internship” section below.

Goal of the internship

The main objective within the project is to develop at least 3 feasible, sustainable and economically interesting value chains for the processing and reuse of the liquid fraction from green residual flows. The five most promising products from the various juice flows, within different application areas (food biomaterials, agrochemicals and energy) are eligible:

  • Proteins
  • microalgae
  • biodegradable plastics (PHA)
  • bio-fertilizer

As part of the internship, your goal is to build a hotspot analysis of different value chains using the Life Cycle Assessment approach in order to enable the mapping of the environmental friendliness of the different options under study, from the type of biomass residues being pressed, the liquid fractions yielded and up to the processing of these liquids for the different potential applications described above.

Who are we?

The materials and energy transition is a major challenge, but we are optimistic about the future. We see and seize opportunities to accelerate. Together!

MNEXT, along with the SMEs, forms the bridge between innovation and society. By conducting applied research with students, teachers, and researchers. By collaborating on educational innovation. This is how we set the materials and energy transition in motion. For a sustainable future. Within MNEXT you will be working for the Biobased Resources & Energy research group which works on the valorization of residual streams from nature, agriculture or industrial sources.
