Background information
MNEXT, together with SMEs and other partners, serves as a bridge between innovation and society. By conducting practice-oriented research with students, lecturers, researchers and stakeholders — and by collaborating on educational innovation — MNEXT accelerates the materials and energy transition toward a sustainable future.
The Biobased Building Blocks & Products (BBB&P) research group focuses on developing biobased polymers and additives with specific chemical and physical properties that can replace fossil-derived materials.
This internship is carried out in collaboration with Relement, a startup specializing in bio-aromatic compounds made from non-edible biomass. These high-performance bio-aromatic building blocks are suitable for applications such as coatings, adhesives, and composites, offering a unique combination of sustainability and functionality.
Assignment description
The aim of the Biobased Adhesive Development project is to explore the potential of producing greener and less hazardous adhesives for both household and industrial applications. Traditional epoxy adhesives are often fossil-based and may contain toxic components. This research focuses on developing sustainable, biobased alternatives with improved environmental and safety profiles.
Your work will involve:
- Developing and evaluating biobased epoxy systems
- Investigating more sustainable curing agents such as (bio-)anhydrides and amines
- Testing different bio-based adhesive formulations on various substrates
- Assessing performance and suitability compared to conventional adhesives
- Characterization activities include:
- Thermal analysis (DSC, TGA)
- Mechanical testing (tensile and flexural strength)
- Evaluation of material properties such as hardness and durability
Desirable Skills
We are looking for a motivated student who:
- Is a 3rd- or 4th-year chemistry or chemical engineering student
- Has an interest in biobased materials, adhesives or polymer chemistry
- Is eager to gain hands-on experience with material development and characterization
- Works accurately in the lab and enjoys experimental research
