Beyond Wood: Impact of building materials on indoor air quality

Are you interested in bio-based materials, indoor air quality, and analytical chemistry? In this internship, you will investigate how a new sustainable building material influences indoor air conditions by analysing its emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The assignment is part of the Beyond Wood project (JTF), which aims to develop and validate a bio-based construction material that can serve as an alternative to conventional panelling and façade products.

Background information

The Beyond Wood project focuses on developing a renewable, sustainable building material and understanding its performance in real applications. One critical aspect of this performance is indoor air quality.

Many bio-based materials naturally emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), originating from fibres, binders, resins or biological processes. These emissions can influence odour, comfort and perceived healthiness of indoor spaces.

To ensure that the Beyond Wood material meets expectations for safety and indoor comfort, we must analyse its VOC profile using controlled laboratory methods.

This research will take place within the MNEXT bio-based construction research group at Avans University of Applied Sciences, which specialises in renewable materials and healthy indoor environments.

Assignment Description

You will characterise and attempt to quantify the VOC emissions of the Beyond Wood material using laboratory-based sampling and analysis workflows.

Your main tasks include:

  • Setting up measurement workflows for VOC sampling

  • Performing laboratory analyses, such as thermal desorption or GC-MS (if available)

  • Identifying and quantifying emitted compounds

  • Comparing emissions to thresholds for indoor air quality, comfort and health

  • Documenting the process and results in a clear report

Research question

“What VOCs are emitted by the Beyond Wood material, and how do these emissions compare to known thresholds for indoor air quality, comfort or health?”

Desired Skills

We are looking for a student who:

  • Has interest in analytical chemistry, material science or environmental health

  • Possesses basic laboratory skills (experience with GC-MS or chromatography is a plus)

  • Can process and interpret chemical data

  • Works systematically and accurately

  • Has good written and verbal communication skills in English

Supervision

Supervisors:

  • Fran Ortega Exposito

  • Annine Rozema

Practical Details

  • Start date: 02 February 2026

  • End date: 10 July 2026

  • Compensation: According to MNEXT/Avans internship policy

  • Working language: English

  • Location: Breda (laboratory and office)
