BBF – Mechanical behaviour of biobased materials for upright extension

As sustainable building methods are gaining prominence, implementing viable alternatives is becoming an important focus for research. One overlooked but very important aspect of buildings is the upright extensions (oplangers in Dutch) for timber piles. These components of the foundation piles are typically made of concrete and are subject to fluctuating groundwater levels. Sustainable alternatives for concrete are extensively researched; however, concrete for upright extensions has different criteria regarding properties and parameters. Since these components are underground, the durability and environmental impact(s) are of great importance. This project aims to perform experiments to investigate the mechanical behaviour of biobased alternatives for upright extensions.

Assignment Description

As an intern at MNEXT, you will have the opportunity to participate in the project ‘BBF,’ which focuses on investigating the diverse possibilities of replacing concrete upright extensions. You will be part of planning and implementing tests for biobased materials for upright extensions and checking if they fulfil the requirements for mechanical behaviour. The necessary requirements, are the focus of this internship

Your main tasks include:

  • Improving the structural calculations of the mechanical behaviour of the upright extension.
  • Performing experiments according to the requirements and standards for durability/deterioration.

General information

  • The length of the internship graduation assignment is approximately 20 weeks.
  • The student will get an internship fee of €350- per month.

Desirable Skills/Qualities of the Student

  • The student should be able to work independently and carry out independent laboratory research (after an introduction and guidance).
  • A background in materials science and/or civil or mechanical engineering is preferred.
  • HBO or university students are welcome.
  • Command of the English language.
