Fabrication of Functionalized Biochar Electrodes with Metallic Co-Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER)

Are you looking for a third-year internship and would you like to work on hydrogen technology and sustainable materials? In this internship, you will investigate how biochar electrodes made from biomass waste can be used in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), an important step in green hydrogen production. You will work on producing and testing biochar-based electrodes that are modified with metallic co-catalysts to improve their performance. In doing so, you will contribute to research at the intersection of chemical technology, chemistry, and the materials and energy transition.

The assignment

In this internship, you will focus on the development and characterization of biochar-based electrodes functionalized with metallic co-catalysts for application in the hydrogen evolution reaction. The aim is to create sustainable and affordable electrode materials based on biomass waste and improve their catalytic activity through surface modification and the deposition of metal nanoparticles, such as nickel, cobalt, or iron.

You will prepare biochar materials, carry out surface functionalization, and apply metal loading. After that, you will evaluate the electrochemical performance using techniques such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Within this assignment, you will investigate how biochar electrodes functionalized with metallic co-catalysts can be optimized to improve catalytic activity, stability, and efficiency for HER.

This assignment is suitable for students in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry.

About MNEXT

MNEXT is the Centre of Expertise for the materials and energy transition. Together with companies, governments, researchers, and students, MNEXT bridges the gap between innovation and society and works on practice-oriented research for a sustainable future. Projects fall within three main themes: transition and value creation, sustainable energy technologies, and biobased and circular materials.

As an intern, you will be a full member of a multidisciplinary research team and work on real-world challenges from professional practice. Every semester, dozens of students do their internship at MNEXT. This means you will not only collaborate closely within your own project, but also connect easily with other students and build a valuable network.

In addition, you will automatically take part in an internship programme with more than 10 workshops that strengthen both your research skills and career competences. These include workshops on the use of AI in desktop research, research integrity, professional use of LinkedIn, and coaching to help develop a start-up idea. All students receive an internship allowance of €350 per month.
