How do biobased construction materials emit VOCs?

Assessing mycelium-bound composites and SAM panels For this graduation assignment, you will investigate how bio-based construction materials emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Within the VOCScan project, you will compare mycelium-bound composites from FC-i with panels from SAM Panels. You will examine how temperature, relative humidity and time influence the measured VOC profiles. Your research will contribute to a better understanding of the performance of emerging bio-based materials for the construction sector. The working language is English.

The assignment

You will apply the VOC screening protocol developed in VOCScan WP2 to material samples supplied by FC-i and SAM Panels. You will prepare the samples, document your work carefully and conduct baseline measurements. You will then compare the measurement results under different temperature and relative humidity conditions and at different points in time.

As part of the experiments, you will use blank measurements and repeat measurements according to the protocol. You will process the results and present them in clear comparative figures. Where possible, you will also help compare sensor measurements with selected GC–MS analyses. GC–MS is an analytical technique used to detect and analyse individual substances.

The focus of the assignment is comparative screening. It is therefore important that you distinguish between sensor signals, identified compounds and quantified emission rates. Your research will result in a documented dataset and a report explaining how the investigated factors influence the screening results.

You have laboratory experience or a strong interest in developing this experience further. You enjoy working with data, record measurement results accurately and are able to plan experiments independently. You will work with MNEXT researchers and receive input from the material and project partners. MNEXT provides regular research supervision and access to the established testing protocol.

This assignment is suitable for students studying Environmental Science for Sustainability, Ecosystems and Technology (ESSET), Healthcare Technology, Healthcare, Welfare and Environment, Healthcare & Social Work (Associate Degree), or Healthcare Management (Associate Degree).

About MNEXT

MNEXT is the Centre of Expertise for the materials and energy transition. Together with companies, governments, researchers and students, MNEXT bridges the gap between innovation and society. As a graduation student, you will take part in practice-oriented research for a sustainable future and become a full member of a multidisciplinary research team.

MNEXT’s projects focus on three main themes: transition and value creation, sustainable energy technologies, and bio-based and circular materials. In this assignment, you will contribute to research into bio-based materials and their potential applications in construction.

Every semester, dozens of students complete an internship at MNEXT. This means that you will work not only with researchers, but also meet many other students and build a broad professional network. You will automatically take part in the internship programme, which includes more than ten workshops on research skills and career competencies. Topics include the use of AI in desktop research, research integrity, professional use of LinkedIn and coaching to further develop a start-up idea.

All students receive an internship allowance of €350 per month.
