The construction sector in the Netherlands accounts for approximately one-quarter of all waste produced (CBS, 2016). This makes it the largest waste-producing sector. On the other hand, it is also responsible for a significant share of recycled material usage. However, these materials often cannot be reused indefinitely.

Our research group, Biobased Building at MNEXT, aims to develop solutions for the construction sector that enable truly sustainable building practices. This means using materials that can be infinitely reused. We see biobased resources as a solution since they can be integrated into the natural cycle.

One biobased material that has recently gained significant attention is mycelium. Mycelium is the underground network of fungi, such as mushrooms. It acts as a natural glue to bind biomass, enabling the creation of a fiber-reinforced composite. Mycelium grows through the fibers, which serve as a growth medium and a bio-composite matrix. Various organic waste streams from agriculture (e.g., straw, hemp fibers, grass, or pepper stems) can be used as substrates.

Assignment Description

As an intern at MNEXT, you will have the chance to contribute to the “MycEoLA” project, which focuses on exploring and evaluating various end-of-life possibilities for mycelium. You will be part of the “lifespan analysis” research group. The key focus areas include:

Determining the physical and mechanical properties of mycelium during its lifespan, particularly when used as a building material.
Identifying threshold values at which mycelium is considered to have reached its “end of life.”
In this project, you will work hands-on with the material and develop skills related to testing its properties. You will design and conduct tests that can be compared with existing values in the literature.

In addition to material testing, you will also conduct literature research on the desired physical, mechanical, and hygrothermal properties of mycelium and its competitors.

Practical Information

Period: February 2025 – July 2025 (approximately 20 weeks).
Compensation: €350 per month.
Location: HZ UAS, Het Groene Woud, Middelburg.
Experience: Internship focused on collaboration, ability to work independently, problem-solving skills, literature research.
