Biobased Construction

The Biobased Construction research group focuses on the collection, development, valorisation and dissemination of knowledge about the application of biobased materials in construction and civil engineering. The scope of the research group concerns residential and non-residential construction, existing and new construction, foundation, construction, finishing facade and roof, finishing and furnishing interior and civil applications in road and hydraulic engineering.

buurtschuur

The Biobased Building research group of professor Frank Huijben consists of lecturer-researchers with a background in civil engineering, construction and architecture from two universities of applied sciences: Avans University of Applied Sciences and HZ University of Applied Sciences. The lecturer-researchers conduct practice-oriented research together with (international) companies, research institutes and students. This is usually done in the form of subsidy and educational projects.

Focus

The research group preferably focuses on building materials and systems that are manufactured from agro-residual flows available in the region. In addition, the strengths of HZ University of Applied Sciences and Avans University of Applied Sciences were examined and the focus is on:

  • Materials and composites from flax, hemp, bamboo and wood.
  • Insulation materials: (flax)lime hemp, mycelium, reed and straw and seaweed.

Paints and varnishes are not actively researched (interface with the Biobased Building Block & Products research group).

In addition, the research group prefers to study mainly biobased construction materials manufactured or used by companies in Zeeland and Brabant. This can create sustainable networks with opportunities for local employment and start-ups in the region.

What does the research group offer?

  • Together with forty companies and knowledge institutions from the Green Deal Biobased Building, MNEXT has developed the knowledge bank www.biobasedbouwen.nl. Via the knowledge bank, everyone, from contractor to policy maker and client, can gather and share knowledge about the availability and application possibilities of biobased materials, products and building concepts.
  • The Biobased Building lectorate conducts practice-oriented research for and with companies. We always involve students in this. If you have a practice-oriented question within one of our research themes, please contact us. We will then look together whether and how we can address the question and what the possibilities are to obtain a subsidy for this.
  • We are always interested in enthusiastic lecturers who want to come and do research at our lectorate. We have hours available for this. If you are interested, please contact us.
  • We involve as many students as possible in the research that the lectorate conducts. We therefore offer interesting minor, internship and graduation assignments. You can find the assignments on our website.
