Marine Biobased Chemistry

The Marine Biobased Chemistry (MBBC) research group focuses on the search, isolation, identification and valorisation of chemical compounds from marine environments. Although oceans and seas cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, an abundance of marine organisms has not yet been explored.

The MBBC group consists of lecturers/researchers with a broad and deep research background in Life Sciences, Biotechnology and (Analytical) Chemistry. The research group is located in Vlissingen, at the HZ University of Applied Sciences, and has a designated laboratory and equipment to enable research. This applied research is done in collaboration with (international) companies, research institutes and students. For more information, please contact Tanja Moerdijk.

Bioprospecting

Some of these marine organisms can produce biologically active compounds of great value. The search for these bioactive compounds is called bioprospecting and marine bioprospecting therefore involves systematic categorized analyses of collected samples from marine life, in order to evaluate whether these samples contain commercially viable products.

The possibilities for marine bioprospecting are still unexplored and this research group therefore wants to exploit compounds from these marine environments for the Biobased Economy. Zeeland is traditionally a region that is closely connected to the sea, which makes it an interesting region to develop with regard to the marine biobased industry. This research group can be an important facilitator in this process.
