Challenge
However, there is a challenge: the quality and scalability of mycelium biocomposite production are inconsistent. The current methods for assessing mycelium growth are often subjective and inefficient. That is why researchers from both Centres of Expertise and the company Biotactical are working on an AI-driven system. This system will enable automatic monitoring of mycelium growth, which is currently done manually and visually. Another goal of the project is to see how the appearance of mycelium biocomposites relates to their physical and mechanical properties. The trained AI system will predict these properties based on visible growth features and decide if the material is ready.
Avans Pre-Seed fund
The Centres of Expertise at Avans act as bridges between research, education, and the professional field. In these Centres of Expertise, practice-oriented research is conducted in public-private partnerships, often with external partners. The Pre-Seed Fund is a tool that can be used to start small-scale, multidisciplinary research projects between Centres of Expertise. Pre-Seed represents seeds that are planted now, which will grow into bigger projects later. Researchers are given the opportunity to address regional challenges, establish connections with companies and organizations, and conduct preliminary research.
Sustainable future
This project promises to improve the quality and scalability of mycelium biocomposites, contributing to a more sustainable future. The project will conclude in February 2025, and the results will be shared.
