What is HyUSE Researching?
HyUSE focuses on the direct use of hydrogen as a fuel in sectors such as industry, heavy transport, and local energy supply. Hydrogen can decarbonize industrial processes requiring high temperatures, enable trucks and ships to run emission-free, and provide energy when solar and wind power are insufficient.
While the potential of hydrogen is significant, there are still many challenges. For example, how should factories be adapted to run on hydrogen instead of natural gas? What safety measures are necessary for hydrogen-powered vehicles? How can a smooth transition from fossil fuels to hydrogen be ensured? The HyUSE project develops next-generation technologies and also investigates regulations, societal acceptance, business models, and system aspects of hydrogen use in various value chains.
Collaboration within HyUSE
HyUSE is an initiative within the GroenvermogenNL program, which accelerates the large-scale introduction of hydrogen in Dutch society. The project is supported by a public-private consortium of 30 partners, including universities, applied sciences institutions, research institutes, and industrial companies. This collaboration creates an innovation ecosystem that helps businesses and organizations make informed investment decisions.
Expectations and results
The first research results from HyUSE are expected in mid-2026. This will mark an important step toward a sustainable future in which hydrogen plays a central role in the energy system.
HyUSE lays the foundation for the integration of hydrogen in various sectors, from water purification to the glass and steel industries. Together, we are working towards a fossil-free society!
