Lunch & Learn: Coloring a Sustainable Future with Fungi

The global market for colorants is growing rapidly, yet conventional synthetic dyes often come with significant environmental and health impacts. What if vibrant, high-quality colors could be produced in a more sustainable way?

The project TUrn FUnghi potentials into a COLorful future (TUFUCOL) explores the use of fungi to produce natural blue, orange and red colorants through fermentation for non-food applications. These fungal colorants are renewable, biodegradable, and free from toxic contaminants, offering a promising alternative to synthetic dyes.

In this online Lunch & Learn session, Jasper Meijer, Senior Researcher Fermentation Technology at MNEXT, and Bram Visscher, Researcher Fermentation Technology at HAN, will share insights from the final phase of the TUFUCOL project. The session covers both successes and remaining challenges in translating lab research to larger, reproducible volumes.

You’ll learn about:
• The goals and outcomes of the TUFUCOL project
• Examples of successful fungal color production and where challenges remain
• Lab-scale research and reproducible upscaling to larger volumes
• Applications of fungal colorants in textiles and packaging
• Opportunities and directions for future research

Date: Thursday January 22nd, 2026
Time: 12:00-13:00h
Level: Intermediate

Why join?
This session offers valuable insights for both SMEs and researchers working on sustainable materials. Discover how fungal colorants can move from laboratory research toward industrial application, and where collaboration and further innovation are still needed to accelerate this transition.
