Turning roadside grass into sustainable biocomposites

Could roadside grass become a valuable raw material instead of a waste stream? A recent publication of our lector Biobased Resources & Energy Jappe de Best suggests it can. 

A techno-economic assessment explored the potential of using grass from roadside verges as a fibre source for biocomposites. Despite challenges such as seasonal availability, contamination, and current waste classification, the study found that roadside grass fibres can be produced at costs competitive with many natural fibres already on the market.

Depending on the production scenario, grass fibre costs ranged from €295 to €528 per ton, while biocomposite granules containing 25% grass fibres could be produced for around €1,000 per ton, significantly below the average market price of comparable biocomposites.

The study also assessed greenhouse gas emissions associated with fibre production. Results showed that emissions were mainly driven by drying energy requirements and diesel use during mowing and collection, highlighting clear opportunities for further environmental improvements.

Overall, the findings indicate that roadside grass has strong potential as a renewable, locally available, and cost-competitive feedstock for the biocomposites sector, supporting both waste valorisation and the transition to more sustainable materials.
