Worlds first

For the first time, a multi-day conference on fungal biotechnology is being organized. In November 2026, MNEXT will host the MycoNEXT conference, which will take place in Breda.

Initiator and organizer Stefano Roccio explains the reasoning behind it, the topics to be covered, and the objectives of the event.

Why is MNEXT organizing this conference, and why now?

“Researchers and others involved in fungal biotechnology and fungal biology often still rely on larger conferences, where these topics represent only a small part of the program—even though developments in the field are moving at a rapid pace. These advancements are highly promising and are attracting a great deal of interest. Furthermore, some of these technologies have reached a stage where they are ready for market application.

That is precisely why we are organizing this conference now: to showcase the latest breakthroughs from both fundamental and applied research, and to highlight the opportunities for putting them into practice.”

What themes are covered in the program?

“The two main themes of the congress are mycelium-based materials—materials and biocomposites derived from mycelium, with a focus on their development and applications, including in the construction sector—and smart or precision fermentation, which involves research into the targeted use of fermentation processes—utilizing fungi or yeasts—to develop new materials and products in a controlled manner.

It is no coincidence that these are areas in which MNEXT itself conducts research and has built up significant expertise over the years. We are delighted to welcome several pioneers in this field—Han Wösten, Lynn Rothschild, and Marc Violo—who will deliver keynote speeches, sharing their experience and expertise to provide inspiration and valuable insights for all attendees.

Furthermore, the program offers an in-depth exploration of these core themes, while also covering a wide range of other topics that advance research and practical applications in the field.”

What do you hope visitors will take away from the conference?

“Fungal biotechnology is a relatively new field. There are many developments taking place simultaneously in various locations. The goal of MycoNEXT is for visitors to gain a clear, comprehensive overview of these developments—a perspective they can then take back to their own research groups. Knowing what knowledge has already been generated helps everyone advance along their own path and prevents redundant, parallel work on something that may already exist.

Finally, we hope that lasting connections will be forged between researchers, educators, policymakers, and professionals from the industry, ensuring that these developments continue to move in the right direction in the years to come. And who knows—if this proves to be a success, perhaps we’ll meet again in a few years for the second edition of MycoNEXT!”

Alle informatie over het congres staat op de speciale Event Website. Door de overweldigende interesse is het maximum aantal bezoekers al bereikt en is het op dit moment alleen nog mogelijk aan te melden voor de wachtlijst.
