ColorFun builds on the earlier TUFUCOL project, which focused on optimising fermentation processes for fungal colorants. While TUFUCOL focused on production, ColorFun addresses the crucial next steps: downstream processing, including extraction, stabilisation and formulation, using green chemistry.
Many SMEs are already experimenting with fungal colorants using traditional or artisanal methods. These can deliver impressive results, but are often inconsistent and difficult to reproduce, making them unsuitable for large-scale production. At the same time, laboratory processes do not automatically translate to industrial conditions, where stability, quality and compatibility with a wide range of materials are essential.
Standardisation for scalability and flexibility
Rather than developing a separate solution for each sector, ColorFun is working on a set of standardised extraction and stabilisation methods. This will result in a stable colorant that can be readily adapted to the specific requirements of different industries, from textiles and packaging to coatings and biobased materials.
This approach combines scalability with flexibility: companies can rely on a consistent end product while retaining the freedom to adapt the colorants to their own materials and processes.
Testing, improving and validating in practice
Professionals from different sectors are involved in an ongoing process of experimentation and optimisation. Together with researchers, they continuously improve formulations and validate them under realistic production conditions. This ensures that the colorants are not only scientifically validated, but also genuinely suitable for use and reproducible at industrial scale.
Learning, researching and innovating with students
Students play an active role in ColorFun. By contributing to research, material applications and laboratory experiments, they not only help deliver the project’s results but also contribute to the development of future-oriented education in biotechnology, chemistry and materials science. In this way, the project helps prepare the next generation of professionals for the sustainable colorants industry of tomorrow.
Accelerating the transition towards a circular and sustainable colorants value chain
By making fungal colorants scientifically validated, industrially viable and commercially attractive, ColorFun helps accelerate the transition towards sustainable colouring solutions. The project addresses key barriers and supports the development of a circular colorants value chain in which fossil-based colorants are increasingly replaced by natural, biobased alternatives.
