Background

In order to decrease the environmental impact caused by the construction sector, biobased materials need to be further developed to allow better integration and acceptance in the market. Within this project, we want to explore the production of a new circular sandwich panel, using mycelium biocomposite as its core and a wood based panel as its faces. The two materials need to be bonded so that it can withstand shear forces without losing the biobased label, therefor a multitude of biobased glues and binders are being explored.

Assignment description

As an intern at MNEXT, you will have the opportunity to participate in the research project “circulaire sandwichpanelen” which focuses development of a fully biobased sandwich panel made of a mycelium composite core and wood based faces. Your part will focus on the connection of the two materials. Researching and testing different glue options and their effect on the performance of the overall panel in mechanical properties and physical properties like water vapor permeability.

The main focus includes:
• Exploring biobased glue options
• Glue modification to enhance adhesive properties
• Testing glue alternatives on mechanical and physical properties.

Your main activities include:
• Literature research on relevant topics.
• Working in a lab setting. Making and applying glues.
• Mechanical and physical testing of glues.
• Analysis of results and writing advice to inform the industry.

Starting Date

August 2024 – February 2025. The length of the internship / graduation assignment is approximately 20 weeks. The student will get an internship fee of €350,- per month.

Desirable skills/qualities of the student

The student should be able to work both independently and in collaboration with other students, researchers and external partners. Experience in lab work and scientific reading is preferred. Background in chemistry, civil engineering and/or built environment is preferred. HBO or university students are welcome.
