Background

As sustainable building methods are gaining prominence, the implementation of viable alternatives is becoming an important focus for research. Mycelium biocomposites (MBCs) serve as potential biobased alternatives to conventional insulation materials within the construction industry; however, more research and development needs to be done for better integration and acceptance in the market. Mycelium is the underground network of fungi, such as mushrooms, and for the biocomposites it acts as a binder of the incorporated biomass substrate. Mycelium grows through the fibers, which function as a growth substrate and a biocomposite matrix. Different organic residual streams from agricultural waste (straw, hemp shives, grass or pepper stems) can be used as substrate. MBCs can be divided into two main categories: board and foam materials, both of which have the potential to substitute conventional materials, i.e., medium density fireboard (MDF), as well as conventional insulation materials, i.e., EPS or PIR. As the material is approaching the market, we would like to explore the material’s different end-of-life possibilities.

Assignment Description

As an intern at MNEXT, you will have the opportunity to participate in the project ‘MycEoLA,’ which focuses on investigating the diverse end-of-life possibilities of MBCs. You will be part of investigating the ability to remanufacture MBCs and determine if the technical properties are comparable to newly made MBCs. These MBCs are intended for insulation; therefore, moisture behavior, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, along with microstructural investigation will elucidate the characteristics of the remanufactured MBCs.

The objectives of the project will be:

·         Remanufacturing Research: Exploring the processes and techniques required to transform used mycelium composites into new mycelium boards.

·         Material characterization and property investigation

·         Optimal application: collaborating with the team to identify the best uses for these mycelium-based materials, potentially in the field of sustainable construction and insulation.

Your main tasks include:

·         Compile a literature review study to catalogue currently tested properties and the remanufacturability of MBCs

·         Work at the mycelium laboratory to fabricate samples

·         Perform property tests to establish material boundaries of remanufactured MBCs

·         Brainstorm potential applications and prototyping

Working language: we have a multidisciplinary and international team. Therefore, the language is English. Some of the researchers also speak Dutch.

Starting Date & Compensation

September 2024. The length of the internship graduation assignment is approximately 20 weeks. The student will get an internship fee of €350,- per month.
